Traffic Control Supervisor Traffic Control Assistant 

Position Summary

As a Traffic Control Supervisor, you will oversee the safe and efficient setup, maintenance, and removal of work zones, ensuring compliance with the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual (VWAPM) and client requirements. This role involves leading field crews, coordinating project readiness, keeping accurate documentation, and maintaining a work environment that safeguards both employees and the traveling public. 

This position is ideal for individuals with solid field experience and leadership skills who are ready to take on greater responsibility. 

Primary Duties

  • Direct and manage traffic control teams during the installation, monitoring, and dismantling of work zones 
  • Verify that all operations adhere to VWAPM guidelines and project-specific requirements 
  • Operate and drive non-CDL flatbed or cone trucks (18’–24’) as needed 
  • Maintain clear communication with contractors, clients, and company leadership regarding daily site activities 
  • Record site operations, crew attendance, and any safety-related issues 
  • Keep work vehicles, tools, and materials clean, organized, and ready for use 
  • Respond to emergencies promptly and adjust traffic control setups when necessary 
  • Provide guidance, training, and coaching to crew members on job performance and safety standards 
  • Promote a positive, safety-oriented culture on every assignment 
  • Represent Spivey Services with professionalism in all field interactions 

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License 
  • Minimum two (2) years of hands-on experience in traffic control or construction 
  • Solid understanding of core traffic control methods and safety protocols 
  • Experience driving larger trucks (18’–24’); CDL not required 
  • Proven ability to lead small field teams with professionalism and urgency 
  • Availability for both day and night shifts as assigned 
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening 
  • Capable of lifting 50+ lbs and performing physically demanding outdoor work 
  • Comfortable working in varying weather conditions 
  • Able to stand, walk, lift, and load equipment throughout a shift 
  • Willingness to travel to multiple job sites within the service area 
  • Flexibility to work nights, weekends, and respond to emergency situations 

Preferred Qualifications

  • American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) certification (Flagger or Traffic Control Supervisor) 
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification 
  • Prior leadership or crew chief experience 
  • Strong communication and documentation skills 
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply traffic control plans

The Traffic Control Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians around construction zones, public events, and road maintenance projects. This position includes setting up and removing traffic control devices, directing traffic, and following all safety guidelines. The ideal candidate is reliable, attentive, and able to work in all weather conditions while prioritizing the safety of both the public and the work crew.

  • Valid Virginia Driver’s License with “0 or Plus” DMV Driving Points
